Mr. Rainey is a graduate of Adrian College, where he played baseball, and later earned his Master's in Sport Management from the United States Sports Academy. He has extensive experience in college athletics, having worked in various positions such as Admissions Counselor, Equipment Manager, Intramural Director, Assistant Coach, Head Coach, and Assistant Athletic Director before becoming the Athletic Director at Adrian College. In his current role, he oversees all aspects of the Athletic Department, including day-to-day operations, budgeting, personnel, gameday operations, and fundraising.
Mr. Rainey is passionate about sports and being active outdoors, and he dislikes lateness, laziness, and unpreparedness. He works a minimum of 40-60 hours per week in business casual attire, with a salary range of $75,000 to $100,000, full benefits, and retirement plans. With his Master's in Sport Management and related experience in leadership training and youth coaching, he is well-prepared for his role.
The industry's salary range for this position is $50,000 to $150,000, and believes the turnover rate for athletic director is average. However, there is great potential for advancement in this field. Mr. Rainey advises students aspiring to a similar position to be patient and understand the time involved in success. He recommends using available resources to become well-rounded in critical areas like budgeting, HR, event planning, and team building. Although the job involves long hours and tough decisions, Mr. Rainey believes the rewards of being around athletes and sporting events far outweigh the challenges.
